Personal Manifesto / The Future of Illustration

Scan 3

I believe that illustration is more than drawing, as a creative it’s our responsibility to create work about the things we care about. I am interested in environmental issues those specifically to do with the sea and this is a subject that more often than not I produce work about. One of my future of illustration quotes summarises how I feel about being a creative. I feel that it’s our responsibility to show the damage we are doing and images speak much louder than words.

‘The future will be the same as the present – only kind of more. We barely register significant social or cultural shifts because we can’t see what the present is changing into.” Varoom Magazine / John O’Reilley / 2013

“We believe this is the beginning of a much larger transformation sweeping the world. The role of art and artists in society is undergoing a significant shift which is spreading under much of the art world radar. Most people do not know about environmental art and unless we join together to spread the word and continue to make ever more effective and powerful use of our creativity to help our communities and ecosystems we will have wasted a precious opportunity.”  Debbie Matthew / 2003 / Greenmuseum.org / …And the Future is Now (I)
